Enhanced Conversions for Google Ads: What They Are and How to Turn Them On

Your Google Ads account probably shows fewer sales than your shop actually makes. Some of that gap comes from blocked cookies, people switching devices and stricter browsers. Enhanced conversions for Google Ads are Google's way of closing part of that gap.

This guide explains what enhanced conversions are, whether they are safe, and how to turn them on step by step. It is the kind of setup our conversion tracking service handles every week, but you can do it yourself with the steps below.

What are enhanced conversions?

Standard conversion tracking works with cookies. When someone clicks your ad, a small file in their browser remembers the click. When they buy, the tag reads that file and tells Google Ads which ad led to the sale.

The trouble is that cookies get blocked, deleted or never set. Someone might click your ad on their phone and buy later on a laptop. In those cases, the sale happens but Google never connects it to the ad.

Enhanced conversions add a second way to match. When a customer buys or submits a form, the tag also sends details they typed in, such as their email address. Those details are scrambled first with a method called SHA-256 hashing. Google then matches the scrambled data against signed-in Google accounts to find the ad click.

Why enhanced conversions matter for your ad spend

More matched conversions help in two ways:

  • Truer reporting. You see more of the sales your ads actually caused, so you are less likely to cut a campaign that is working.
  • Better bidding. Smart bidding and Performance Max learn from conversions. More complete data gives them a clearer picture of who buys.

We will not promise a set uplift. The gain depends on your audience, your device mix and how much data your checkout collects. But for most shops and lead-gen sites, it is one of the simplest tracking upgrades available.

Is it safe and privacy-friendly?

This is the first question most owners ask, and it is a fair one.

Hashing turns an email like "[email protected]" into a long string of random-looking characters. The same email always produces the same string, which is how matching works. But the string cannot be turned back into the email. With the Google tag, this hashing happens in the visitor's browser before anything is sent.

There are still a few rules to follow:

  1. Only send data your customer gave you directly, such as at checkout or in a form.
  2. Update your privacy policy to say you share this data with Google for ad measurement.
  3. If you have EEA visitors, Consent Mode v2 must be in place. Enhanced conversions data is only used when the visitor has agreed to ad data use.
  4. Accept Google's customer data terms in your Google Ads account.

Before you start: what you need

Enhanced conversions sit on top of normal tracking. They do not replace it. If you have not set up basic tracking yet, start with our guide on how to set up Google Ads conversion tracking.

RequirementWhy it matters
A working conversion actionEnhanced conversions improve an existing tag, not a new one
Customer data on the pageThe email or phone must be available when the tag fires
Access to Google Tag Manager or site codeTo pass the customer data to the tag

Consent Mode v2 (EEA traffic)Required to use data from EEA visitors

How to turn on enhanced conversions for Google Ads

There are three ways to set it up: the Google tag, Google Tag Manager or the Google Ads API. Most small businesses and shops use one of the first two. We will cover Tag Manager in detail, as it is the most common.

Step 1: Switch it on in Google Ads

  1. In Google Ads, go to Goals, then Conversions, then Settings.
  2. Open Enhanced conversions for web and tick the box to turn it on.
  3. Accept the customer data terms if asked.
  4. Choose your setup method: Google tag, Google Tag Manager or Google Ads API.
  5. Save.

Step 2: Send the customer data with Google Tag Manager

  1. Open your existing Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag in Tag Manager.
  2. Tick Include user-provided data from your website.
  3. Create a new User-Provided Data variable.
  4. Choose how Tag Manager finds the data. "Automatic" lets Google look for an email on the page. "Manual" lets you point at specific fields. "Code" reads the data from your data layer.
  5. For shops, our team recommends the "Code" option. Ask your developer to push the customer's email (and phone, if you have it) into the data layer on the order confirmation page.
  6. Save the variable and the tag.

If you use the Google tag directly instead, you pass the same details with a user_data setting in the conversion event. The idea is the same: give the tag the email at the moment of conversion.

Step 3: Test and publish

  1. Open Preview mode in Tag Manager and place a test order or submit a test form.
  2. Check that the conversion tag fired once and that the user-provided data variable shows a value, not "undefined".
  3. Publish the container.

How to check it is working

Give it a few days after publishing. Then open the conversion action in Google Ads and look at the Diagnostics tab.

You want to see enhanced conversions marked as active and a healthy match rate. If Google shows warnings, they usually point to missing data, badly formatted emails or a tag that fires before the data is ready.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Turning it on in Google Ads but not sending data. The setting alone does nothing. The tag must receive the email.
  • Relying on "Automatic" detection. It can pick up the wrong email, such as one in your site footer. Manual or code is more reliable.
  • Sending data that is already hashed incorrectly. If you hash it yourself, it must be SHA-256 of a lowercase, trimmed email. Otherwise let the Google tag do it.
  • Skipping consent. Without Consent Mode v2, EEA data cannot be used, so your match rate will look weak.
  • Forgetting leads that close offline. If your sales happen by phone or in person, look at enhanced conversions for leads, which matches offline sales back to the original form.

FAQ

Do enhanced conversions replace normal conversion tracking?

No. They add to it. Your normal conversion tag still does the main work, and enhanced conversions help Google match the sales that cookies miss.

Will customers' email addresses be visible to Google in plain text?

With the Google tag, the data is hashed in the browser with SHA-256 before it is sent. Google uses the hashed value only for matching and measurement under its customer data terms. You still need to tell customers about it in your privacy policy.

How long before I see results?

Diagnostics usually take a few days to show a status after you publish. Any change in reported conversions builds up over the following weeks as more orders come in. Avoid changing bids or budgets based on the first few days.

Do I need enhanced conversions if I also run the Meta Conversions API?

They do different jobs. The Meta Conversions API helps Meta match sales to Meta ads, while enhanced conversions help Google Ads. If you advertise on both, it is worth setting up both.

Get enhanced conversions set up properly

Enhanced conversions are a small change with a real effect on how well Google understands your sales. The setup is quick, but the details around data, consent and testing are where it goes wrong.
